Boston Marathon Training: Week 9


Good Afternoon and Happy Monday! After a week of running in Mexico, it was time to return to the col weather of Toronto. I didn’t have an issue acclimatizing to the cold weather; in fact, it really wasn’t that cold this past week!

[ Training week 9 / 7 weeks until the Boston Marathon ]

Monday – W09D01 – Steady Run (14 kilometers/1:07:52/4:51 pace | Strava Results). Our plane landed at 2:30am and by the time we got home, it was 4:15am. I didn’t sleep much and was pretty wiped out, but with really mild temps, I really had no excuse to miss this run. So happy to have gotten this run in and kick off week 9 of my training plan on the right foot!

Tuesday – W9D02 – Workout (warm-up | 5x 1,000m, 2:00 rest | cool-down) | (Strava Results). So pressed for time today and I was too tired to do my workout in the morning, so I left it for the afternoon. The only way to get this run in was to do it on the treadmill. I had to cut short the workout meaning I only got in 5 1-kilometer repeats instead of 6, but I got it done! I’d rather modify a workout than miss it entirely. Happy with the pace I was able to maintain on the treadmill today!


Wednesday – W09D03 – Recovery Run  (12 kilometres/1:02:02/5:10 pace | Strava Results).  Another late afternoon run and I probably should have taken this one a tad slower; however, this week is a recovery week so I won’t be running as much anyway! The weather this week has been amazing so far!

Thursday – W09D04 – Workout (12km Progression Run | cool-down) | (Strava Results). Progression day! I love progression runs even though they are really tough. Today’s attempt was really good with a small blip around the 3km mark where I had to run around the construction on Eglinton Avenue. It’s a bit of a challenge running around my neighborhood with all the construction! There are a number of tall condos going up as well as a light rail system that is causing havoc! Thankfully, the rest of my progression run went fairly smoothly!

Friday –W08D05 – Easy Run (7 kilometres/40:46/5:49 pace | Strava Results). It was absolutely pouring outside today, so I kept it indoors for the second time this week. I only had to run 7 kilometers at an easy pace so I don’t mind it if I need to hop on the treadmill.

Saturday –W09D06 – Long Run (23 kilometers/1:56:15/5:03 pace | Strava Results). Again, this is a recovery week, so my long run was limited to 23 kilometers. I met my buddy Dom at his place and we ran down to the lake to meet up with Daniel. When we first started, it was fairly mild, but hard to breathe. I thought it was my sinuses, but it was actually the humidity; the air was really thick!

By the time we got down to the lake, the weather was getting cooler and the air was not as thick! Daniel had a workout to do, so Dom and I took it easy and ran along the MGT.

Today was the last run in my Saucony Ride 10 trainers! After 1,013 kilometers, it’s time to retire this amazing running shoe; easily one of my favorite shoes to run and train in!

Sunday –– W09D07 – Rest Day!

Another great week of training in the books! This coming week is race week with my first race of 2018 going down on Sunday. Really excited to see where my fitness is!
