Boston Marathon Training: Week 8


Good Afternoon and Happy Monday! We returned from our vacation early this morning (arrived home at 4:15am to be exact!) and fortunately, it’s Family Day in Ontario today which means no work or school so we can spend the day relaxing and doing laundry. Fun!

Running while on vacation is always tough; especially when you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort with the temptation to eat and drink all week long. While I did plenty of that, I also did plenty of running and I couldn’t be happier with the way week eight of my training plan went down!

[ Training week 8 / 8 weeks until the Boston Marathon ]

Monday – W08D01 – Steady Run (12 kilometers/57:33/4:47 pace | Strava Results). My first run in the heat and I really felt the difference. The Moon Palace is a huge resort in Cancun and it’s easy to get lost. I managed to hold a really strong pace (perhaps too quick at certain points) while working my way around the resort.

I did research running routes in Cancun, but the really good paths were closer to the downtown core. There’s not much beyond the resort and the road didn’t look safe to run on. The good news is I don’t need to leave the resort to run and can easily complete a 12km run without feeling like I’m running in circles!


Tuesday – W8D02 – Workout (warm-up | 2x (1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 2:00, 1:00 w/ 1:00 jog between) | cool-down) | (Strava Results). Speedwork in 31c is hard; really hard! There’s a roughly 2-kilometer stretch of open road that spans from the security gate of the resort to a roundabout; perfect for workouts. I shortened my warm-up so I could conserve energy for the ladder workout I had to do today.

There’s a bit of a breeze on the resort which I felt on my back the first few intervals and it probably had something to do with my pace hovering around 3:23-3:30/km! I felt super strong and while I was definitely feeling the sun and the heat on the open road, my legs were turning over just fine! Th way back was a different story as the tailwind became a headwind and the same effort was resulting in a slower pace on my Garmin. Effort is effort and I’m happy with this workout!


Wednesday – W08D03 – Recovery Run  (12 kilometres/1:08:51/5:44 pace | Strava Results). We left the resort early to swim with dolphins which meant my run would be pushed back to later in the afternoon. My wife swam with dolphins years ago, but my son and I have not. I had no idea what to expect and now that we did it, it is now one of the most amazing memories and top 5 things I’ve ever done! What an unbelievable experience!

We returned to the resort around Noon and stopped at the buffet for lunch. I was really hungry at this point so I decided to push back my run a bit longer. By 2pm I was ready to run and by this time, it was blazing hot outside! Even though I had an easy run planned, my skin was already burned so I decided to run on the treadmill. I had a great view of the ocean which made the time fly by and I was able to save my skin from another scorching day!


Thursday – W08D04 – Workout (warm-up | 8km @ MP | 4x100m | cool-down) | (Strava Results). Today’s workout called for 10km at marathon pace. For the first time, the heat really got to me and I had to cut short my marathon pace workout. It was getting hard to breathe and I was starting to get a little delirious. I still did my 4x100s after 8km at marathon pace, then ran straight to the buffet to grab breakfast. I was so delirious at this point, I forgot to pause my Garmin and the last 3 kilometers was basically me walking around the lobby and buffet!

I have the entire day to recover and thankfully tomorrow is a short, easy run!

In other news, there are 60 days until the Boston Marathon!


Friday –W08D05 – Easy Run (7 kilometres/36:47/5:15 pace | Strava Results). Today’s run was just what I needed! A nice easy 7-kilometer tour of the resort; short and sweet. I visited a few of the other areas of the resort we would need a day pass to visit and really enjoyed the run. Felt really good considering the trouble I had on yesterday’s run!


Saturday –W08D06 – Long Run (30 kilometers | Strava Results). With a 30-kilometer long run scheduled today, I rose before the sun today to avoid having to spend a couple of hours getting baked! I got a few clicks in before I got to see the sunrise which was absolutely beautiful! There’s a big golf course on the resort which made for a really scenic run and kept me from having to run boring loops! I forgot to unpause my Garmin for a bit of my run, so for anyone creeping my Garmin or Strava results, I actually did 30 kilometers!

Last year while we were in Punta Cana, I had a 30-kilometer run scheduled, but only got in 25 so getting the entire 30 kilometers in was absolutely amazing!



Sunday –– W08D07 – Rest and Travel Day!

I couldn’t be happier with the work I did while in Cancun! While I was in the midst of my marathon training, I managed to eat and drink a lot and still have fun!
